Lazic went back to Brahms' correspondence with the violinist for whom he wrote the concerto, Joseph Joachim, in essence to reverse-engineer the soloist's part and rebuild it for the piano. Lazic's arrangement generally works well. On the piano it comes out as choppy chords. Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony tend to stay out of Lazic's way, allowing the piano to take the spotlight, and the recording's sound is good, if slightly shallow. The disc is filled out with Lazic playing the solo Rhapsodies, Op. 79, and Scherzo, Op. 4, where the sound is closer, a little richer, and captures the nuances of his playing.

4 – Dejan Lazic, piano/Atlanta Symphony Orchestra/Robert Spano – Channel Classics multichannel SACD CCS SA 29410, 66:10 : This SACD is quite a surprise all the way round: Amsterdam-based Channel Classics coming over to the . to record a major . Muzio Clementi was attracted to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and shortly after its premiere asked Beethoven to arrange it for piano and orchestra, which the composer did. In the same way Lazic has been fascinated by the lovely Brahms Violin Concerto – considering it one of the best instrumental concertos ever composed. He wanted to have an idiomatic version for piano and orchestra to perform himself, and finally decided to create it himself.

Dejan Lazić, Robert Spano, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Not only is this an outstanding performance by Dejan Lazic and the Atlanta symphony, but Lazic's understanding of Brahms' idiom and compositional techniques is completely convincing. Had Brahms chosen to transcribe this Concerto himself, I am convinced he would have created almost the same result. My professional pianist friends, at first skeptical, have, on hearing the CD been fascinated and much impressed.
