Printed on back cover: "Larry Banks was a genius of New York black music who, with his family and friends, produced sublime 60s soul for all tastes. Dave Godin had a lifelong devotion to the work of Banks and his family and this CD was planned before he died. It serves as a tribute to them both. 1, 3, 4, 7, 11 to 15, 17, 19, 20 are mono; all others are stereo.

Many UK soul fans knew Dave’s work from his championing of the early days of Northern Soul. He loved the concept, the fanaticism and passion and its independence from a music business which he thought cynical and more in love with the pound than the music. Dave often said that these were his proudest achievements.

Apart from deep soul classics there are examples of Larry Banks' northern soul genius in tracks such as & One More Lie' by Milton Bennett (co-composer of & Now'), the Geminis' storming & Moves Me', the Devonnes' & The Gittin' Up', and unknown group the Shaladons' classy take on & Can Do It. But the most impressive aspect of this album: Larry Banks wrote -- or co-write -- every single song on here. 24 fine soul tunes that should be heard by more people. It's sad that great artists and producers like Larry Banks remain unknown to the masses, and even many soul fans. But thanks to Ace Records and their Kent Soul division for helping promote the cause with another great collection of rare soul music.

Lawrence H. "Larry" Banks (3 October 1931 – 26 February 1992) was an American R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and record producer. Banks was born in New York City and grew up in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. His father, Arthur Banks, was a bass singer of religious and classical music, who also performed as a member of a barbershop quartet

I’ve always wondered why The Exciters didn’t enjoy greater commercial successes given their talents. Brenda Reid had an amazing voice – tough, but highly commercial and was more than the equal to scores of contemporaries who enjoyed far more commercial recognition and success. While it wasn’t a massive commercial success. the song did well enough for RCA management to green light an album – 1969’s Caviar and Chitlins. Co-produced by Larry Banks, Paul Robinson, and Herb Rooney the album clearly put the spotlight of lead singer Reid.

Larry Banks also recorded under his own name, and both recorded with and produced his second wife Joan, who recorded as Jaibi. A compilation of recordings, including those by Bessie Banks, was issued as Larry Banks' Soul Family Album by Ace Records in 2007. At that time it was reported that Bessie Banks "continues to sing though she confines herself to gospel music no. Feel It: A hen's tooth?". Feel It. Larry Banks wrote and recorded under his own name in the early and mid 1960s, his first release being "Will You Wait" on the Select label. Ace Records information on Soul Family Album Archived 2010-10-25 at the Wayback Machine. com, by Richie Unterberger.
