What is perhaps even more remarkable about Sax Quintet (New York) 1998 is that the single piece performed, "Composition 173," was originally scored for a different instrumentation entirely (four actors, two soloists and ensemble, as documented on Composition 173 (Black Saint, 1996)), although you would never know it from this spirited rendition. In fact this live recording from the Knitting Factory was part of a six set concert series which featured the same chart being interpreted by changing combinations on each occasion. The set constitutes one of a growing download only series on the saxophonist's New Braxton House label. Joining Braxton on a veritable saxophone showroom of instruments are four regular collaborators from this period in Chris Jonas, Seth Misterka, James Fei and Jackson Moore.
Anthony Braxton is like an anchorage. Maybe not an easy one to reach, but he’s always there for everyone longing to deal with intellectually challenging musical routes. Since several years now his label/cultural organization The Tri-Centric Foundation has represented a stronghold for improvisation, free jazz and avant-garde in general, running a constant work of promotion of Braxton’s immense musical archive and new productions alongside tutoring many young rising musicians (Katherine Young, Taylor Ho Bynum, Jessica Pavone and Mary Halvorson among them)
Two Compositions (Trio) 1998. Both pieces were recorded live at Wesleyan University on April 17, 1998, and clock in at under an hour (56 and 49 minutes, to be precise). Despite the fact that they stick to a stable meter and consist of interlocking, repeated patterns, they remain lively and entertaining - yes - throughout. Composition N. 227" features Braxton with Chris Jonas and David Novak.
