Martin Best (born 13 April 1942) is an English singer, lutenist and guitarist, and composer. Best has been active mainly in early music including renaissance music, minstrel songs and the French troubadour traditions, in works related to Shakespeare, such as the sonettes and music to Shakespeare plays, and also in songs of the Swedish ballad tradition. He has often performed in constellations named Martin Best Consort and Martin Best Medieval Ensemble. Martin Best Consort: The Pirate's Serenade, L. .

"An Eighteenth Century Entertainment") The Martin Best Consort Argo Records ZDA 171 (LP). Contents: Side One. The Upper Classes. Northumberland Pipes I, Northumberland Pipes II, Fine Old English Tory Times. Bellman Pastorale, Ladies of London, Careless Gallant. Lass of Patie's Mill (instrumental), The Lads of the Village. Out of print, not reissued on CD. A fine collection of 18th century ballads, broadsides and satires, performed with wit and style. The 'cycle of themes' - Country Life, The Town and so on - groups them somewhat arbitrarily. Sources include 'The Beggar's Opera', William Blake and (anachronistically) Charles Dickens.

Martin Best Consort: The Pirate's Serenade, L.This date, which can be traced back to an 18th-century scholars mistake, has proved appealing to biographers because Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616 and he was the third child of eight and the eldest surviving son. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married 26-year-old Anne Hathaway, the consistory court of the Diocese of Worcester issued a marriage licence on 27 November 1582. The next day, two of Hathaways neighbours posted bonds guaranteeing that no lawful claims impeded the marriage, twins, son Hamnet and daughter Judith, followed almost two years later and were baptised 2 February 1585.

Oh the fine old English Tory times; When will they come again! In those rare days, the press was seldom known to snarl or bark, But sweetly sang of men in pow'r, like any tuneful lark; Grave judges, too, to all their evil deeds were in the dark; And not a man in twenty score knew how to make his mark.

With fine old English penalties, and fine old English pains, With rebel heads, and seas of blood once hot in rebel veins; For all these things were requisite to guard the rich old gains. 10. Of the fine old English Tory times-. Soon may they come again! This brave old code, like Argus, had a hundred watchful eyes, And every English peasant had his good old English spies, To tempt his starving discontent with fine old English lies, 15. Then call the good old Yeomanry to stop his peevish cries, In the fine old English Tory times-. Soon may they come again! The good old times for cutting throats.
