Aphelion by Rempis/Abrams/Ra, released 21 January 2014 1. Ruah 2. Noriya 3. Saqiya This debut release by the regular working trio of Dave Rempis, Joshua Abrams, and Avreeayl Ra is a perfect example of what makes Chicago such a fertile breeding ground for improvised music; three musicians of widely varying ages, backgrounds, playing experiences, and musical interests join forces to deliver moments of both sublime beauty and volcanic energy, continually tempered by the seamless narrative momentum that they weave together in a seemingly effortless way. Although the trio has only been working sinc.
Aphelion is the debut release by the regular working trio of saxophonist Dave Rempis, bassist Joshua Abrams and percussionist Avreeayl Ra, which was recorded live at Chicago's Elastic and Constellation venues during 2013 and released on Rempis' Aerophonic label.
A tall task, but saxophonist Dave Rempis has made the jump from sideman to entrepreneur with applause. The trio recording Aphelion and duo Second Spring are the third and fourth releases on his artist-run Aerophonic label. Following the searing Percussion Quartet double live record Phalanx (2012) and the chamber jazz trio Wheelhouse Boss Of The Plains (2012), these discs expand in different and new directions. Rempis maintains that spiritual side with his newest trio of bassist Joshua Abrams and percussionist Avreeayl Ra. The former drummer for Sun Ra can be heard of late with bassist Harrison Bankhead and in Nicole Mitchell's ensembles. Abrams, an in-demand bassist, performs with drummer Mike Reed, Rob Mazurek, Hamid Drake and with Living By Lanterns.
Listen to music from Dave Rempis - Joshua Abrams - Avreeayl Ra like Noria, Ruah & more.
Dave Rempis has had many projects. This is one of the great ones. Dave Rempis, Joshua Abrams, Avreeayl Ra. Aphelion. Close your eyes and imagine a new jazz trio with a saxophonist, a bassist and a percussionist. The three compositions on this album were recorded maybe just one year after Dave Rempis joined forces with Joshua Abrams and Ra, but it's scary how atmospheric they become. One moment it's Eno fog, the next it's blistering, stratospheric bop. Aphelion doesn't inspire admiration, it inspires wonder. Bring it home today and confound, I mean, convert the neighbors.
REMPIS, ABRAMS, RA & BAKER - Live at Unlimited 32, Schlachthof, Wels, Austria, 2018-11-09. This is a fascinating, multifaceted record that'll hit you with one unexpected moment after another, all of them enjoyable. Phil Freeman, Burning Ambulance. But in this relatively new trio with bassist Joshua Abrams and percussionist Avreeayl Ra, he shows off a surprisingly gentle sid. his limber outfit is the most organically ebbing-and-flowing band I've ever heard him lead. Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader. This band is rooted in spiritual communication and demonstrates much openness in its approach, making this a very warm and inviting as well as challenging work.
