Let's face it, Big Mama Thornton will always be chiefly recalled for her growling 1952 reading of the Jerry Leiber-Mike Stoller classic "Hound Do. But the other 17 sides on this collection of her 1952-1957 output for Don Robey's Peacock Records aren't exactly makeweight. Thornton's mighty roar was backed by the jumping combos of Johnny Otis and saxist Bill Harvey, producing additional gems in "My Man Called Me," "They Call Me Big Mama," "The Fish," and a duet with the ill-fated Johnny Ace, "Yes Baby.

A big woman who often dressed like a man, Big Mama Thornton sang as tough as one too. Her first hit, "Hound Dog," put her on the musical map, charting before Elvis's version, but a series of bad luck and bad deals kept her from the superstar heights she so obviously deserved. Still, her legend lives on with that inimitable voice, a jubilant performing style, and that big beautiful body belting out some of the best blues ever to come from the fairer sex. We'll even take her version of "Hound Dog" over Presley's.

Big Mama's thunderous smash version of the Lieber & Stoller title tune leads off this collection of her 1952-58 Peacock singles. The classic "Hound Dog" is usually associated with Elvis Presley, but blues fans know: Presley's recording wasn't the first. That honor belongs to singer Big Mama Thornton, whose own recording of "Hound Dog" was eclipsed by Presley's. Her version is on this collection in all its glory, opening a CD of 17 killer. This phenomenal collection from a ruefully underrated performer, "Hound Dog: The Peacock Recordings," depicts some of the various faces of Big Mama Thornton. Having first heard Big Mama featured on Rhino Records' fantastic and extensive "Blues Masters" series, I was instantly a fan.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton only notched one national hit in her lifetime, but it was a true monster. Hound Dog" held down the top slot on Billboard's R&B charts for seven long weeks in 1953. Alas, Elvis Presley's rocking 1956 cover was even bigger, effectively obscuring Thornton's chief claim to immortality. That's a damned shame, because Thornton's menacing growl was indeed something special. The hefty belter first opened her pipes in church but soon embraced the blues. She toured with Sammy Green's Hot Harlem Revue during the 1940s.
