Ferry’s ability to find and reveal what is hidden in a lyric, a musical phrase, or even a key signature is uncanny. The Jazz Age finds Ferry covering himself in radical fashion: he doesn’t sing. The Jazz Age celebrates Ferry’s 40th anniversary in music by re-recording some of his classic tunes - from the 1972 Roxy Music album to 2010’s Olympia - inspired by the sounds of ’20s jazz.

On this album, his orchestra covers his own songs previously rendered with his vocals via Roxy Music or the solo man himself (Bryan Ferry). On this set of his tunes, rendered in a 1920’s jazzy swing an. woon? Swoon or no swoon, this set’s devoid of his signature croon, yet still interpreted in his voice. On this timeline, The Jazz Age, Bryan is director, producer and primary artist, newly reinterpreting (or rather having various seasoned musicians catering to his musings) his own songs as old, classic an. old, with style and musical prowess. But listener beware: it may require some patience. Bryan is renowned as a musical master of nuance. And yet still his repertoire ranges from highly dramatic rock pomp and circumstance to pure pop and earnest romance, be they cover-songs, o. ot. The Jazz Age Q&A. Produced by Rhett Davies & Bryan Ferry.

The punchy beginning to Bryan Ferry’s Jazz Age inspired instrumental album articulates from the outset that this is an album to take notice of. To celebrate Ferry’s 40 years as both an artist and as the creator of Roxy Music, Ferry has re-recorded much of his own work in the style iconic to the roaring ’20s. There are no surprises in this album. Ferry has not set out to shock, or even indeed surprise. It is a nostalgia trip, right from the upbeat opening track Do The Strand down to the seductively lazy closing track This Island Earth.
