Confusion is Sex is Sonic Youth’s first full-length studio album, released in 1983 on Glenn Branca’s Neutral Records. At this point in their history, Sonic Youth had a rather complicated relationship with their drummers. When Richard Edson left, they tacked up drummer-wanted fliers around town, a request which only one person answered. His name was Bob Bertelli, but he’d shortened it to Bob Bert.
Confusion Is Sex is the debut studio album by American noise rock band Sonic Youth. It was released on 12" vinyl in February 1983 by record label Neutral. It has been cited as an important example of the no wave genre.
Abrasive and archaic, theatrical and confrontational, Confusion Is Sex marks the opening strides that Sonic Youth made during their long slog through the American underground scene of the '80s. And yes, this album is underground if anything - it's lo-fi to the point of tonal drabness, as the instruments seem to ring out in only one tone, that of screechy noise. Yet that tone in itself is part of the album's style, which is one of antithesis.
Confusion Is Sex was Sonic Youth's second release, this time with interim drummer Jim Sclavunos behind the kit, aside from two tracks which feature Bob Bert HISTORY. The album was released in early 1983, following Sonic Youth's first tour (the "Savage Blunder" tour w/ the Swans) in late 1982
Confusion Is Sex is unrefined, unsettling, and unpredictable. On this album, Sonic Youth displays their avant-garde brand of songwriting and composition. The music on Confusion Is Sex is certainly not for everyone, but those who can appreciate its values will be drawn to the innovative noise rock that the album boasts.
Confusion Is Sex is Sonic Youth's first full length album, originally released in 1983. It was reissued first by SST in 1987 and then again in 1995 on DGC with extra tracks from the Kill Yr Idols EP. The album features a live cover of the The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog". The cover image is a sketch by bassist Kim Gordon and guitarist Thurston Moore. This image was used on gig posters early in the band's career. Confusion Is Sex was recorded by Wharton Tiers in his Chelsea studio (which he had set up in the basement of a building where he worked as a superintendent). It was mostly recorded during Jim Sclavunos' brief tenure as drummer for the band, and he appears on drums for most of the album.
