Paris All-Star Blues: A Tribute. The Jay McShann orchestra of the early 1940s, best known for having among its sidemen Charlie Parker, only lasted a few years, but made its impact on jazz history. In 1989, pianist McShann had a rare opportunity to record with a big band, a truly all-star outfit. Included among the illustrious players on this CD are trumpeters Clark Terry, Terence Blanchard and Carmell Jones, trombonist Al Grey, the tenors of Hal Singer, Jimmy Heath and James Moody, altoists Benny Carter and Phil Woods, bassist Jimmy Woode, drummer Mel Lewis, and vocalist Ernie Andrews, among others.

This is the guy who discovered Charlie Parker and with whom Bird made his initial recordings. I know the term all-star is probably overused but what else could you say to describe a band that includes guys that built their foundation on Parker's playing such as Phil Woods, Jimmy Heath and James Moody, let alone the pre-Parker great, Benny Carter. what about such names as Al Grey, Clark Terry, Mel Lewis, Sahib Shihab, the young lion (at that time) Terrence Blanchard, arranger Ernie Wilkins, and, to me, a very under rated blues singer, Ernie Andrews. Recently watching a Brasilian TV channel of music, I had a good luck to see a French production video "Paris All Star Blues:A Tribute" featuring Jay McShann and all those cats. Antonio Fabio Corte Real São Paulo Brasil.

His first recordings were all with Charlie Parker, the first as the Jay McShann Orchestra on August 9, 1940. The band played both swing and blues numbers but played blues on most of its records; its most popular recording was "Confessin' the Blues". The group disbanded when McShann was drafted into the Army in 1944. Grammy nomination, Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance, Paris All-Star Blues (A Tribute to Charlie Parker), 1991. Grammy nomination, Best Traditional Blues Album, Goin' to Kansas City, 2003. 1954: Kansas City Memories, Jay McShann Orchestra, with Charlie Parker, Walter Brown, Al Hibbler and Paul Quinichette (Decca). 1968: New York – 1208 Miles (1941–1943) (Decca). 1979: The Big Apple Bash (Atlantic).

Tribute to jay mcshann piano solo. Early life and education. McShann was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and was nicknamed Hootie. Musically, his education came from Earl Hines's late-night broadcasts from Chicago's Grand Terrace Cafe: "When 'Fatha' went off the air, I went to bed". He began working as a professional musician in 1931, performing around Tulsa, Oklahoma, and neighboring Arkansas. Pioneer Award, Rhythm and Blues Foundation.

His first recordings were all with Charlie Parker, the first as "The Jay McShann Orchestra" on August 9, 1940. Although they included both swing and blues numbers, the band played blues on most of its records; its most popular recording was "Confessin' the Blues". After World War II McShann began to lead small groups featuring blues shouter Jimmy Witherspoon. Witherspoon started recording with McShann in 1945, and fronting McShann's band, and had a hit in 1949 with "Ain't Nobody's Business". As well as writing much material, Witherspoon continued recording with McShann's band, which also featured Ben Webster. Paris All-Star Blues (A Tribute to Charlie Parker) – Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance – Nominee, 1991 Grammy Awards. Goin' to Kansas City – Best Traditional Blues Album – Nominee, 2003 Grammy Awards. Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, 1989.
