Robert Frank Grill (November 30, 1943 – July 11, 2011) was an American lead singer, songwriter and bass guitarist, best known as a member of the rock and roll group The Grass Roots. Grill was a native of Hollywood, California where he attended Hollywood High School. Soon after graduation, he began working at American Recording Studios with musician friends Cory Wells and John Kay (who later formed Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf, respectively).

Knighton left in 1976 and Alan Deane took over, followed by guitarist Glen Shulfer in 1977. ABC Records issued a final greatest hits package of the group titled ABC Collection in 1976. But in late 1977, Grill decided to take a break from performing and later recorded the 14 Greats album on Gusto Records featuring himself and Provisor. This album consisted of 1978 rerecordings of their hits
The Grass Roots began life as a phantom. They wrote Where Were You When I Needed You and, as the Grass Roots, recorded a demo. When the song had some success on the radio, they cast about for an existing band to become the Grass Roots. Mr. Grill appeared on many of the band’s albums and also recorded a solo album, Uprooted, released in 1979. Robert Frank Grill was born in Los Angeles on Nov. 30, 1943.
CBS) Rob Grill, lead singer of The Grass Roots, died Monday. He'd been suffering from the after-effects of a fall. He was 67. WCBS FM reports they were going to have Grill on to promote The Grass Roots' place in this summer's "Happy Together" tour but the fall prevented his appearance. Grill had toured extensively in the past 30 years.
