Linda Ronstadt – Canciones. Posted on July 15, 2016 by darklanternowen. To celebrate Linda Ronstadt’s birthday today, I had to spin some old favourites. These days, Linda cannot sing because of Parkinson’s Disease. However she has given us over 30 albums of music to enjoy. Canciones de mi Padre – I love this album (from 1987), together with Mas Canciones (1991). Still my favourite Linda Ronstadt albums, as much as I enjoy much of her other work – such as the 3 album set with Nelson Riddle and the collaborations with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton, these 2 collections of songs in Spanish, always give intense listening pleasure. Both albums won Grammy Awards for Best Mexican-American Album. 3 x LP box set with Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra. I especially enjoy her Spanish enunciation and the tonal and emotional range of her delivery.
Canciones De Mi Padre (Spanish for "Songs of My Father", or "My Father's Songs") is American oducer Linda Ronstadt's first album of Mexican traditional Mariachi music.
Linda Ronstadt probably has the most beautiful and technically accomplished voice ever to grace a Mexican ranchera. On Más Canciones, her second collection of Mexican songs, Ronstadt’s pristine, bell-shaped chest tones, clear falsetto and controlled sobs compete with the crystalline strings and trumpets of the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan orchestra for sheer prettiness. The trouble is that the Mexican ranchera is not a quaint traditional music.
Canciones de Mi Padre. Linda Ronstadt abandoned the pop audience in 1983, turning toward traditional pop music. She recorded three albums with Nelson Riddle before changing direction yet again, this time recording a set of traditional Mexican songs titled Canciones de Mi Padre. Occasionally, Ronstadt oversells the songs but overall, the album is charming, affectionate, entertaining, and more successful than her stilted Nelson Riddle collaborations.
Here, Linda Ronstadt performs some classic Mexican folk songs, but, again, as in her Frenesi CD, she performs the songs exactly as they should be sung. She does a couple of songs that I had never heard, plus she does versions that few modern singers take on any more, I suppose because of the technical difficulties. I had "Canciones de Mi Padre" for years and knew it backwards and forwards before I discovered this collection. Some of the arrangements are simpler, but no doubt, this record is a treasure. As always, Linda's voice is amazing and the production overall is just beautiful. 1. Tata Dios (Father God). 2. El Toro Relajo (The Troublesome Bull).
