Voodoo is the second album by Virginia singer/musician Michael Archer, better known simply as D'Angelo. This was his second album released in 2000 and he didn't release a follow-up until late 2014. 01. Playa Playa 02. Devil's Pie 03.
And Voodoo was positioned as a more down-to-earth alternative to the infinite excess of late-90s hip-hop and R&B. 's a joke," scoffed D'Angelo at the time. It's sad- the people making this shit have turned black music into a club thing. For his sake, here's hoping D hasn't flipped on the radio in the last five years. I got something I'm seeing; I got a vision," D'Angelo told Time upon Voodoo 's release. This album is the second step to that vision. It seems safe to say the prophecy he was speaking about did not entail more than a decade of nothingness, or drug addiction, or shame. Now, it's difficult to say where this vision is leading.

Voodoo is an interesting album to listen to on headphones, but I personally have to encourage listening to it through speakers with a decent subwoofer. The songs don’t so much come from the speakers as much as they creep from them, slowly filling the room with atmosphere. This holds particularly true with Playa Playa, opening with what sounds like, appropriately, a Voodoo ritual of some kind. It then becomes a statement of intent and purpose. Steal you with my two shot, control you with my drop, blaze you with my handle, and bless you with my pop sing multi-tracked D’Angelos. Its chiming melody sings one to sleep as D’Angelo spins a yarn of African heritage. It’s a beautiful way to close out a dark album. But just as it ends scattered bits of the album play in reverse, rewinding back to the beginning, and before you know it, its started again.
It must have been difficult to match his debut (and the frequent delays prove it was on his mind), but Voodoo is just as rewarding a soul album as D'Angelo's first.
