A Fierce Pancake is the second and final album and only full-length studio album by Anglo-Irish experimental rock band Stump, released 7 March 1988 on Ensign Records. After the band had enjoyed some underground success in the 1980s, including the release of their critically acclaimed "Buffalo" single and Quirk Out mini-album in 1986, the band signed to major label Ensign Records and began work on A Fierce Pancake in 1987.
Stump – A Fierce Pancake. Label: Ensign – CHEN 9, Chrysalis – CHEN 9. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. Country: UK. Released: 1988. This Album is Dedicated to the Life and Works of Flann O'Brien and Wilhelm Reich. Recorded in London and Berlin. Released with a printed inner sleeve.
Unfortunately, pressure to change their style to something more commercial caused this fine group to disband after only one full lenght album. I came across a pristine vinyl copy of A Fierce Pancake by Stump at an antique shop in New Ulm Minnesota. How did it get there? Who bought it in 1988, listened to it once and decided 25 years later they didn't like it?
Although Stump is often lumped in with the so-called C-86 movement of British indie pop (unlike most of those bands, Stump actually appeared on the New Musical Express sampler cassette of that name), they actually have little in common with the jangly guitar pop of Talulah Gosh or early Primal Scream. Indeed, the closest comparison is Captain Beefheart. This Irish quartet, led by singer Mick Lynch and keyboardist Kev Hopper, mixes jagged melodies that take abrupt left turns with bizarre lyrics delivered in voices ranging from silly falsettos to a grunting basso profundo.
