löf's debut album Við og Við was originally released in Iceland in 2007 by 12 Tónar, but was not released in the United Kingdom and the United States until 2009, after she had signed to One Little Indian Records. löf released her third album Sudden Elevation in 2013 on One Little Indian Records and it is her first album sung entirely in English. Produced again by long-time collaborator, Skúli Sverrisson, Sudden Elevation was largely recorded in a late autumn 2011 stint in a seaside cabin in Hvalfjörður, western Iceland.
And with an ever growing roster of artists such as Ólöf Arnalds, the collective contribution seems to be slowing not one bit. Arnalds has been working primarily as a vocalist with collective Mm, whose experimental soundscapes are not too far removed from what we have come to expect from the home of Bjork and Sigur Rós. Her solo debut, released in Iceland in 2007 and finally getting a release in the UK now, is quite a different kettle of co. For an album’s worth of songs from which one doesn’t understand to engage and thrill as much as Við Og Við is no mean feat. This is pastoral folk of the highest standard, in which the songs sound both ancient and brand new at once – a real treat that bodes well for the imminent release of a second solo album. löf Arnalds MP3s or CDs. MP3: Ólöf Arnalds – Ævagömul orkuþula. Við Og Við, roughly translated to mean Now and Again, was produced by Kjartan Sveinsson of Sigur Ros fame. With contributions from Sveinsson, Múm’s Eiríkur Orri, and Skulli Sverrisson the folky bent of the album is a welcome surprise from a host of artists who are largely associated with an experimental movement that favors large orchestrations and electronic washes. This album is more in line with Nico Muhly or Cat Power record with a dash of Dylan’s straightforward songwriting style.
