From the Mars Hotel is the seventh studio album by rock band the Grateful Dead. It was mainly recorded in April 1974, and originally released June 27, 1974. It was the second album by the band on their own Grateful Dead Records label. From the Mars Hotel came less than one year after their previous album, Wake of the Flood, and was the last before the band's then-indefinite hiatus from live touring, begun in October 1974.
Complete your Grateful Dead collection. First US pressings of this album have the word AUTHENTIC embossed down the left hand side of the front sleeve - this was at the direction of the band due to the widespread counterfeiting of the band's previous album, Grateful Dead - Wake Of The Flood, the first on their newly formed label Grateful Dead Records.
From the Mars Hotel, while not a classic, represents one of their better studio albums. Jerry Garcia sounds engaged throughout and takes the vocal reigns for most of the songs on the album - although he's not the most gifted vocalist, he proves himself able and versatile. He sings the rollicking opener, ". Blues," with a tongue-in-cheek seriousness that gives the political song an edge, and he lends emotional sincerity to the atmospheric ballad "China Doll. Garcia shines on guitar during the funk workout "Scarlet Begonias," but the ensemble work is best.

From Mars Hotel is filled with a selection of rather quirky numbers. Blues puts a smile on my face, with its occasional humorous lyrics, and the odd playing that surprisingly harmonizes extremely well. Blues, Loose Lucy does practically the same, but has a much more simple feel to it. Each very hard to understand and describe. On top of those two tracks, the album features two of The Grateful Dead’s greatest hits. Those two being the Reggae influenced Scarlet Begonias, and the commonly covered Ship of Fools.
