Hive Mind by Ital, released 13 February 2012 1. Doesn't Matter (If You Love Him) 2. Floridian Void 3. Privacy Settings 4. Israel 5. First Wave If you’ve heard Daniel Martin-McCormick's name recently, it would probably have been either in association with his disco/punk/echo band 'Mi Ami', or as 'Sex Worker' on the Not Not Fun label, or finally as 'Ital' on NNF’s sister label 100% Silk, recording quite different sounding house music to this album.
Ital returns to the HIVE MIND with the layered slow groove of "Doesn't Matter (If You Love Him)" that lets the the sampled title stutter throughout until, indeed, it doesn't matter.
Ital - Hive Mind Daniel Martin-McCormick's already established himself as a ubiquitous presence on the experimental music scene. From his spot in defunct DC hardcore band Black Eyes, throaty disco-punkers Mi Ami or with the weirdo glam of Sex Worker, Martin-McCormick's seemingly already made a virtual tour of musical niches, nooks and crannies. Beginning last year though, Martin-McCormick began releasing long, unspooling FX-laden house as Ital.
Hive Mind is his first full-length as Ital after three excellent 2011 12"s helped launch Not Not Fun sublabel 100% Silk's foray into electronic dance music. A sound-world almost pathologically obsessed with its own neatness, house is an excellent foil for Martin-McCormick. It wasn't always this way: In its early Midwest "disco on a budget" incarnations, house music's wild, amateur, and experimental nature overwhelmed the mechanical precision of drum machines. Those early recordings were oriented toward social and communal issues; Hive Mind is smaller and more private. It's body music meant for the mind, though some distance from the living-room techno peddled by labels such as Smallville and Dial. Recognizable four-on-the-floor kick drums provide a backbone from which Martin-McCormick can hang his gargled synths.
Ital represents, at least in theory, Martin-McCormick's take on "straightforward" electronic dance music, but there's little that's straightforward about Hive Mind (Ital's first full-length following a trio of 12"s) - and while you could probably dance to much of it, that feels fairly low down on the list of priorities here.
