Bach recordings are uneven in quality, but his finest performances show him to have been a thoughtful, scrupulous, and effective interpreter. He was discerning in his choice of soloists and outstandingly well served by his instrumentalists. Fritz Werner was equally distinguished as a vocal and instrumental composer. Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Awake, calls the voice to us'), BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Wake, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, regarded as one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas. He composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and first performed it on 25 November 1731. Bach composed this cantata to complete his second annual cycle of chorale cantatas, begun in 1724

CDI, track 19) and an equally famous initial chorus of BWV61 & komm der Heiden Heiland' (CDI, track 1). Where required, Werner could be direct and bellicose, as in the brisk start of BWV 130 (this CD; also BWV 80 and BWV 19), but generally he is on the soft side and quite delicate. Sometimes my ear desires to hear a faster tempo, as, for instance, in BWV 26 or more sharp accents, as in the bass aria from BWV 8 (CD1, track 22). But then, one can take a different recording and compare.
