The precursor of Dr. Hook. The name Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show was used until 1975 and this name must be used until that date (plus ANV, if necessary!). The name was changed due to a record deal with another Label. George Cummings, Ray Sawyer, Billy Francis, and Popeye Phillips all originally came from the band "Chocolate Papers".

Hook (shortened from Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980)

Doctor Hook, later released as Sylvia's Mother, is the debut studio album by American country rock band Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, released in 1971. Ray Sawyer – lead vocals. Dennis Locorriere – lead guitar, lead vocals. George Cummings – steel, electric and Hawaiian guitars, backing vocals. Rik Elswit – rhythm guitar. Billy Francis – keyboards, backing vocals.

An important thing to remember about Dr. Hook is that they never began as a real band, not in the sense of digging deep into their hearts and letting the feelings flow on the page. They were a bar band who carved out a respectable but undistinguished following in the northeast, recording a demo that eventually got the attention of a talent scout who paired them with Shel Silverstein, a poet turned songwriter who needed an outlet for his tunes.
