The album is inspired by Hippolytus, a play by Euripides. Holter recorded Tragedy with electronic instrumentation, largely out of necessity, since she lacked the funds to hire session musicians.
Julia Holter – Tragedy. Label: Leaving Records – LR/015. I don't know if this particular release of Tragedy has the Introduction at the beginning or the Interlude at the middle but these are very important pieces in developing the whole concept of the album

Tragedy- Julia Holter's first full-length- is one of "those records," but it's also more: more sonically detailed, more attentive to its compositions, and more clever and varied about its use of grayscale. Holter isn't just holding a Russian icon painting in the air and cranking the echo. As a general rule, I try and avoid album concepts, especially when it gives the album weight it doesn't earn elsewhere. Tragedy, for example, is based on a 2,439-year-old Greek play by Euripedes- just try and make it seem unimportant after that.
Tragedy is Julia Holter’s first studio LP, released on August 30, 2011. The album is inspired by Hippolytus, a play by Euripides and uses quotes from either Robert Bagg’s or . Coleridge’s version of Euripides' Hippolytus as lyrics.
