When I picked this one up after her show in Chicago, I was worried it would have the same wow and flutter issues that was so prominent in her last vinyl releases. Luckily, no wow and flutter problems here though there is a slight warp.

Mavis Staples has lived a life. Her songs dating back to her time with the legendary Staples Singers are more than just the best kind of soulful earworms, they’re words and notes painted from the front lines of one of the most contentious periods in American history. Hers is a name that’s earned its rightful place alongside the most powerful and relevant voices of the Civil Rights movement, and her words and music are as relevant today as ever. Booker is just one in an impressive stable of collaborators Staples leans on to get things done on Livin’ On A High Note. Even Nick Cave gets in on the mix, allowing for what on paper makes for the most diverse record of Staples’ late-career resurgence.
Livin' on a High Note was released the week her version of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" won a Grammy - only her second - in the category of Best American Roots Performance, and preceded the HBO premiere of the documentary Mavis! by a couple weeks. Staples was in the public consciousness as much as ever and was continuing to move in new directions.
Certainly Livin’ on a High Note sounds like a happy album. High Note complements rather than contradicts those bleaker depictions of 21st century America and casually argues for Staples’ legacy as an agitgospel singer. Would we have Beyoncé singing, "I like my Negro nose and my Jackson 5 nostrils" in 2016 without the Staples singing, "I like the things about me that I once despised," at Wattstax in '72? In that regard, the most crucial song on here is also the shortest: "What do we do with all of this history now?" Staples asks on "History Now," penned by Neko Case.

Gospel matron Mavis Staples’ remarkable third act continues with Livin’ on a High Note. Her fourth album for ANTI-, a rootsy sister label to the punk institution Epitaph, High Note draws on her reputation as a Civil Rights unifier (with the Staples Singers) and voice of moral dissent, featuring songs by likeminded outsiders Nick Cave (the haunting and spare Jesus Lay Down Beside Me ), Neko Case (the protest-minded History Now ), and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, all upheld by Staples’ frank, powerful voice.
