Peter Tosh may have written marijuana's greatest advertisement - and mantra to weed-smokers everywhere - with "Legalize It," but this Roots Reggae stalwart was a lot more than your run-of-the-mill hash head. Son of a single mother and a preacher father who refused to recognize Peter as his son, Tosh grew up with an arrogant and volatile temperament. In the meantime, Tosh was enduring violent run-ins with Jamaican police, including brutal beatings. In spiritual crisis due to slumping sales and his personal demons, Tosh went to Africa in the early 1980s. In 1987, after returning to Jamaica and releasing his final album No Nuclear War, Tosh was killed in his home. Reggae lost a powerful political voice, a great if troubled individual, and one of its founding fathers that day. Only one perpetrator was apprehended - a personal friend, who was put to death by the Jamaican courts.
They get the hits, but not the heft that made Tosh the toughest and the greatest; but at a budget price this set surely brought in the punters. And hey, EMI was so impressed with their own efforts that they reissued the album in the States the following year. But don't believe for a second that this was the best Tosh had to offer.

Peter Tosh helped for The Wailers (then known as The Wailing Wailers) in 1964 along with Bunny Wailer and the band had early success before bringing in Bob Marley in 1967. Tosh and Wailer left the group then they felt that the band was being overcome by Marley’s growing fame and Peter Tosh went on to launch a success solo career. Legalize It was the first solo album released by Peter Tosh and the titular song went on to become one of his most famous. It was also an early song of social expression by Tosh as he began forming the more militant social message that would become his hallmark after leaving The Wailers. Tosh was, however, the writer and driving force behind some of The Wailers early hits such as 400 Years.
