Natalie Hinsch-Gröndahl. Astrid Varnay is nothing less than outstanding as Brünnhilde. She clearly has an intimate understanding of the role is an absolute pleasure to listen to. Wolfgang Windgassen sings Siegfried. It is his first appearance in the role and he is heard to better advantage in other recordings. The thing that makes him special in this recording is his youthfulness.

Hinsch-Gröndahl Waltraute - Ira Malaniuk Woglinde - Erika Zimmermann Wellgunde - Hetty Plümacher Floßhilde - Gisela Litz First Norn - Maria von Ilosvay Second Norn - Ira Malaniuk Third Norn - Regina Resnik. I am a sucker for bargain recordings of Wagner’s Ring and have several on my shelves that would serve as a fair introduction to the novice even if ideally a top-quality recording in best stereo sound with a libretto, synopsis and notes is preferable. Unfortunately, in the same track around the same time, an electronic buzzing increasingly intrudes and persists for a couple of minutes until the end of the track – but that is an isolated incident. Hermann Uhde makes his mark in the cameo role of Donner with its one big moment when he wields his hammer. Maria von Ilosvay is steady, imposing and hieratic as the Ur-Earth-Mother, Erda.

WAGNER Siegfried, Wolfgang Windgassen ( Siegfried ); Astrid Varnay ( Brünnhilde ); Hans Hotter ( Wanderer ); Gustav Neidlinger ( Alberich ); Paul Kuën ( Mime ); Josef Greindl ( Fafner ); Maria von Ilosvay ( Erda ); Rita Streich ( Woodbird ); Clemens Krauss, cond; Bayreuth Fest O & Ch, ORFEO C809113R (13 CDs: 852:46) Live: Bayreuth, 8/8–12/1953. The opening of act II comes as a surprise, as Krauss seems to lack conviction, and again there is a talent mismatch involving Malaniuk, this time when she is set against Varnay’s magnificent Brünnhilde and Hotter’s commanding Wotan. Hotter’s narrations are consistently gripping over some of Wagner’s most sparing, daring scoring. One really feels that Walküre act II is the crux of the Ring ’s argument, in particular the struggles of the Götternot Narrative.

Maria von Ilosvay Ira Malaniuk Regina Resnik. Erika Zimmermann Hetty Plümacher Gisela Litz. Wagner GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG WWV 86D Live recording Astrid Varnay Wolfgang Windgassen Josef Greindl Frans Anderson Otto Wiener Elisabeth Grümmer Jean Madeira. Ursula Boese Rita Gorr. Dorothea Siebert Claudia Hellmann. Uhde is a great Gunther and Greindl a monstrous Hagen. Grümmer is Gutrune and Windgassen is on point for Siegfried. Ilosvay is still the best to play every mezzo in the ring. Astrid Varnay signs her best Brünnhilde, with the only flaw of the bass notes in the first part of the immolation scene. Knappertsbusch this time manages the gravitas, doing wonders with the brass and performing a solemn Funeral march. To finish off, Birgit Nilsson is the third Norn.

Ira Malaniuk, with her mellifluous mezzo-soprano had become firmly established at Bayreuth after deputising as Fricka a year earlier. Few would have guessed in 1953 that she would be followed as Fricka by Regina Resnik, at the time still very much a soprano, albeit with a naturally sensual and dark vocal colour. Erstwhile baritone Ramón Vinay was garnering acclaim as both Parsifal and Siegmund, having triumphed as Tristan the previous year
