Diller was born Phyllis Ada Driver in Lima, Ohio on July 17, 1917, the only child of Perry Marcus Driver (1862–1948), an insurance agent, and Frances Ada (née Romshe; 1881–1949). She had German and Irish ancestry (the surname "Driver" had been changed from "Treiber" several generations earlier) . Diller at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, 1966.
Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in Los Angeles at age 95. She died peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face, her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press. Fantastic tribute to Phyllis Diller in the Los Angeles Times: She took the whole Cosmo Girl package, turned it inside out and covered it in spray paint and glitter glue. The light-socket hair and kabuki makeup, the sequins and the metallic gloves, even the cigarette holder were all just props.
Phyllis Diller refined her craft in several performance environments. The first is nightclubs. She made her professional debut in 1955 at San Francisco’s legendary nightspot, the Purple Onion, where she was held over for eighty-seven consecutive weeks. From the 1960s through the 1990s, she performed in clubs across the country.
Starting in 1959 and throughout the 1960s, she released multiple comedy albums, including the titles Wet Toe in a Hot Socket!, Are You Ready for Phyllis Diller?, and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller.
