Dixie Lee" has dated rhythms, and "Mustang" was an attempt to achieve a hit on the level of Morgan's "The Sidewinder. However, Byrd sounds fine on those numbers; he digs into the complex chord changes of "Fly Little Bird Fly," is sensitive on "I Got It Bad," swings on his "I'm So Excited by You," and performs his memorable countermelody to "On the Trail," which had been recorded earlier by several other musicians.

Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a jazz artist.

This Donald Byrd hard bop album has many features that made 1960s Blue Note albums great. There is blues, swinging numbers with excellent playing, graceful mid-tempos, and a crack band: Byrd, Freddie Waits on drums, Hank Mobley and Sonny Red on tenor and alto respectively, Billy Higgins on bass and the great McCoy Tyner on piano. Sonically speaking, this album even happened light years before "Electric Byrd. Rather than reinvent the wheel, "Mustang!" holds down the fort for straight jazz. Like a fine glass of Cabernet, the album has exquisite balance. From the fast sizzlers to the slow cookers, "Mustang" is deeply satisfying to the ears.
