Ferruccio Busoni was a musician of many skills. During the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th, Busoni was one of the most talented - and controversial - of piano virtuosos. Yet Busoni was also a musician riddled with contradictions. Born in 1866 during the full bloom of Romanticism, he died in 1924 during the rise of that anti-Romantic movement known as neo-Classicism, and both his performances and his compositions vacillated between those two extremes. What is most striking, however, is how much more successful Schreker and Hindemith are than Busoni: Schreker's nostalgic post-Romanticism is sincere if faded, and Hindemith embraces Busoni's ''new Classicism'' with a clarity and confidence the older composer was unable to muster.
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under Gerard Schwarz conveys the disparate idioms of these three composers in convincing fashion, though David Shifrin's clarinet tone in the Busoni is breathy and forced.

Gerard Schwarz is one of those conductors we tend to take for granted. Always in the public eye on disc, his career has encompassed large ensembles and small, alongside a major stint as a virtuoso trumpeter. Problematically, from the collector’s point of view, it has been spread all over the place as far as labels are concerned, with much of his earlier work as an instrumental soloist as well as with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra appearing on Nonesuch, and long out of print.

Gerard Schwarz belongs to that rare breed of conductor (Neeme Jarvi and Richard Hickox are others) who combine a healthy appetite for rare or neglected repertoire with the ability to create, in the studio, performances of concert-hall immediacy and precision. Schwarz turned 70 last autumn, and the occasion was marked by the release of a 30-CD set, The Gerard Schwarz Collection, his own selection of some of his favourite recordings (drawn from a host of different labels, including Delos, for whom he made the bulk of his recordings of Americana, Naxos, EMI, Sony Classical and others). Another lovely disc-and my guess is that this music sits right at the heart of Schwarz's musical centre of gravity-combines pieces by Schreker (Kammersymphonie), Hindemith (Kammermusik No 1), Busoni (Concertino for clarinet) and Honegger (Concerto da camera).
