Only for completionists (0%). In first place, the album is centuries behind any UK Proto Prog band of the late 60's, something not so terrible if you are in 1967, being that most of this bands were pretty advanced for the era, but this album is from 1972, when real Prog bands were releasing masterpieces, so now we are having real problems. Then come the vocals, Patrick Campbell-Lyons sounds like a Paul Mc'Cartney wannabe, without the class or charisma. The arrangements are so simple that many POP albums of the era sound much more elaborate than Songs of Love and Praise.

After a third album got caught in the fallout of shady business shenanigans – the highly collectable Dedicated To Markos III – Nirvana split up and the duo went their separate ways. Nirvana – Local Anaesthetic. Patrick Campbell-Lyons followed up the wayward curio that was Local Anaesthetic with Songs of Love and Praise. Released in 1972 on the Philips label, it contains reworkings of two older tracks along with new compositions from our talented one-man band. Once again it is strictly a solo album with roughly the same guests as the previous record, but uses the Nirvana name for consistency and commercial appeal, although Patrick claimed on the original album liner notes that Nirvana has never been a group, band, or solo artist: it is simply a centre-point for various musical journeys I embark on,.

This Nirvana record, two side long tracks, can best be described as of its time in its construct as in 1971 it was all the rage for Prog bands to do this sort of thing. But actually, like a lot of those epic tracks, both Modus Operandi and Home are practically just a load of shorter songs stuck together. Yes perhaps it is a curio in their discography, but a nice one. Songs Of Love And Praise however is a fine and uplifting pop record, it’s a real shame it wasn’t a success. Sad there was no follow up too, as it was Nirvana’s swansong, for a time anyway. Songs Of Love And Praise makes for a good introduction to the band and if this whets one’s appetite try Local Anaesthetic too, as although it is a bit more difficult there is plenty to enjoy for the more adventurous listener.
