Their debut, All Hell Breaks Loose, features a classic hard rock attack, solid songwriting, and great production by Kevin Shirley. The trademark twin guitar sound of TL is ever present, as is their aggressive attack, melodic sensibility, and deep groove consciousness - Gorham was one of the architects of that sound.
All Hell Breaks Loose", the title track of Black Star Riders' storming debut album, is a case in point. Alright Scotty!" roars frontman Ricky Warwick, teeing up a certain Mr. Gorham's classy lead guitar salvo. I love that song starting the album", laughs Warwick. The Lizzy faithful are going to hear Scott's solo and think, 'Fantastic! Everything's going to be okay. Black Star Riders is a brand new band, then, but also one respectful of the past.
So I was excited to hear what Black Star Riders, the new band featuring members of the recent, touring incarnation of Thin Lizzy, had brought to the table. Excited, but also aware that something key would be missing without the legendary Phil Lynott’s writing, vocals, and bass playing. I firmly believe that there was a magic in Thin Lizzy that, without Lynott, can never be re-captured. It could just be the rivethead in me talking, but if the compositions on All Hell Breaks Loose had been just a little heavier, this could very well have been THE album of 2013. Lack of heaviness aside, this is still a hugely professional, well written, and masterfully recorded work. Scott Gorham and co-axeman Damon Johnson are on fire, with no single note sounding out of place on the entire record.

The record, All Hell Breaks Loose, was recorded with the line-up of Scott Gorham, Ricky Warwick, Marco Mendoza, Damon Johnson plus drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper, Megadeth). Scott explained to us why he chose to forgo the Thin Lizzy name in favor of Black Star Riders: "Well, I think it was more guilt than anything else," he said. The past few years have been such a wild ride and now with the release of the album, it sounded like a bad-ass album title that summed up what Black Star Riders is all about. The artwork in All Hell Breaks Loose features a painting by Gil Elvgren, the legendary US artist best known for his work on pin-up girls, advertising and illustration.
