Rather like Not the Nine o'Clock News' "Gob on You", I get the feeling that this just might be a spoof - but a very clever one at that. If Gary Paul Nicholson is not the figment of someone's imagination, then I suspect that all the artists on this CD are figments of his. There is no doubting that quite a deranged talent has spawned a series of 14 tracks that mimic the styles (in sound, playing and composition) of some rather better known acts from the late 70s, early 80s. For C-Thru-Pants read X-Ray Spex. For Cyril Cheesehouse read John Cooper-Clarke.

Sniffing and Cursing – The songs. 1. Transplant – The Daves (1977) Arriving in London from the Scilly Islands, they signed to Rigor Mortis Records before sinking back into ill-deserved oblivion. 2. The Common Touch – The Leamington Manuals (1979) The ska-influenced Manuals, heard here before going through a number of name-changes. All of the names were rubbish. And not funny either. 10. You Never Close your Eyes – Baz and Kev (1976) Baz and Kev started playing live in pubs in 1938 and didn’t notice the blitz. This can best be described as ‘an anomaly’. 11. The Fifth Musketeer – The Radiogramme (1980) Singer, Dib (5,682nd in line to the throne), wrote this, which was used in a TV ad for the Morris Ital. Dib retired on the proceeds and has since bred. 12. Definite Article – String (1977) An out-take from their first album, ‘Green Banner’; rejected for being too long.

After various legitimate jobs, Eunice adopted a stage name to ensure her Methodist minister mother wouldn’t find out she was playing the devil’s music in an Atlantic City bar (Nina was a pet name given to her by a boyfriend; Simone came from French actress Simone Signoret). Mississippi Goddam was controversial, not least because of the cursing in its title. We released it as a single and it sold well, except in the south where we had trouble with distribution, wrote Simone. For his album Wild Is the Wind, David Bowie admitted he was inspired to record a version of the title track after he met Simone in Los Angeles in 1975, while Jeff Buckley’s Lilac Wine slips uncannily into the metre chosen by the singer.

If nothing else, you can spend an amusing hour guessing who these songs sound like. - Not sure who the Trads are though! If you have fond memories of the punk / new wave period, then this little finding from Southwark (produced by ex-Vibrators bassist Pat 'Walking on Sunshine' Collier) is this year's sniffing treasure trove.
