In 1970, the Beach Boys were coming off their least commercially successful album to date, Sunflower, which was their first album for Warner Bros. Though a completed master was assembled in early 1971, it was decided by (some) Beach Boys and Rieley to exhume a legendary uncompleted track from Smile, Brian and Van Dyke Park's epic "Surf's Up", finish it and make it the centerpiece of the album, which would then bear the song's name.
Many albums by the band were fully assembled or near completion before being shelved, rejected, or revised as an entirely new project. In recent years, new rarities compilations and reissues of studio albums have been released with studio outtakes included as bonus tracks.

The bootleg called Landlocked by the Beach Boys is a much circulated, rejected version of what would eventually become Sunflower. In 1970 Warner/Reprise smartly demanded that the band continue work on new songs. The Beach Boys went back to the drawing board, abandoning the Landlocked songs at the time.
The third of a four-part Beach Boys upload, this is a reconstruction of the unreleased 1970 Beach Boys album Landlocked, an early version of the 1971 album Surf’s Up. All of the tracks that have been officially released have been compiled from their best possible sources (spread over six different releases), and the remaining unreleased tracks were personally remastered from bootlegs for their best possible soundquality. Besides, if Landlocked never really existed, it would truly be an album that never was! Landlocked’s genesis essentially came out of the band’s flurry of studio activity in 1969 while making the Sunflower album. Two were even rerecorded for later releases ( Big Sur and When Girls Get Together ) and another found it’s way onto yet another unreleased Beach Boys album ( . Is On The Way on Adult/Child, which I will tackle shortly).
This is a reconstruction of the unreleased Beach Boys 1977 album Adult/Child. Initially recorded as a solo project by Brian Wilson, almost all of it was scrapped and the MIU Album was released instead in 1978. Here, the tracks which were officially released have been compiled from their best sources, and the tracks not officially released have all been personally remixed to match as closely as possible the fidelity of the officially released ones. I found that the commonly bootlegged version-from a sometimes droppy cassette-seemed to lack bottom end and some highs but the mids were intact (unlike the Landlocked tapes). When reEQ’d, they seem to fit wonderfully alongside the officially-released tracks. One note must be made that no speed corrections were made to my Adult/Child reconstruction.
Adult/Child (sometimes typeset as Adult Child) is an unreleased studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, intended to follow the group's 1977 Love You. Like Love You, it is virtually a Brian Wilson solo project with other group members serving mainly as additional vocalists. After it was rejected by Reprise Records, the band released the 1978 . Album in its place with an almost entirely revamped song list. A few projected tracks for Adult Child were eventually released on later albums and compilations.
2009 – Beach Boys biographer Jon Stebbins was contacted by a man living in central California who possessed a box of multi-track tapes deriving from the Shut Down Volume 2 album that had been lost for decades. 2010s – A piano demo of "Surf's Up" was found hidden within a reel of the Wild Honey track &quo. After a year of recording, what would have been the Beach Boys' twelfth studio album Smile was scrapped. Because many of its tracks were left incomplete, an album could not be fully assembled
