The Firebird: Kashchei's Awakening. 23. The Firebird: Complete Darkness/2nd Tableau. 25. Sinf: I. Allegretto. The Bartok and Stravinsky are also excellent readings, quite good in their own right, probably not best of breed, but fine. All of these recordings were made in the period 1969-72 in Paris and Chicago, and are representative on EMI's best engineering from the period. The Bartok and Janacek have been released together on CD separately. This 2 disc set is, to my knowledge, the only CD issue of the Stravinsky and Lutoslawski, and judging from its scarcity, was not in print for long.
Stravinsky: The Firebird. To mark the 80th birthday of the dynamic Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa in September 2015, Warner Classics has released a sumptuous 25-CD box containing his complete recordings for the label, which were made between 1968 and 1997. The set places an emphasis on Seiji Ozawa’s mastery of the colourful, large-scale orchestral scores of the 19th and 20th centuries and on his collaboration with such soloists as Itzhak Perlman, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Mstislav Rostropovich.
The Firebird is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1910 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with a scenario by Alexandre Benois and Fokine based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing and curse it possesses for its owner. When first performed at the Opéra de Paris on 25 June 1910, the work was an instant success with both audience and critics.
