I've only been twice, to South Carolina and Virginia, but I've wanted to go deeper, for a longer period of time, and get sweatier. It's always fascinated me (The South, not sweating). I like being foreign in my own country, using a whole other set of rules and customs, and eating tons of fried food and feeling great about it. As a southophile and a natural voyeuse, I was very ready for the Oxford American's "Best of The South" Issue. The DVD that accompanies it is full of great shorts that function as their own odes-a clip of a sound test from Elvis's '68 Comeback Special, a slice from Gary Hawkins documentary on writer Larry Brown and Frederick Wiseman's Juvenile Court, and a Betty Boop film. The issue, in both its incarnations, is exhaustive and satisfying.
