I've been toying with the Basement Tapes since I first heard about the. nd I first heard about them in the mid 60's as holy grail rumors, circulating with the reverence of urban legends in Dylan circles. There were even bootlegged copies of those sessions floating around, with people merely hinting that they knew a guy who knew a guy who had heard them.
The reputation and mystique of The Basement Tapes sessions precedes this official release by nearly half a century. No other volume in Bob Dylan’s celebrated Bootleg Series can boast the same magnitude of anticipation. The Basement Tapes Raw, like the original ’75 release, blends brilliant performances with pure curiosities. What’s remarkable, though, are how many beautiful, emotionally daunting moments came into being during these rather informal sessions.

The Basement Tapes Raw. Overview (current section).
The Basement Tapes: Raw rights this wrong, stripping away the excess overdubs and excising the ten Band songs - a process which includes handing some of the tunes back over to Bob, including a wildly careening version of "Don't Ya Tell Henry" - and then adding in all the major Dylan originals missing from the 1975 LP ("I'm Not There," "Santa-Fe," "Minstrel.
Nearly 50 years after their recording, the complete Bob Dylan and The Band Basement Tapes Raw have been released. People who are casual Dylan fans or know the tapes more by reputation than by content? It makes this release a little trickier to recommend. As a whole, the music is pretty good, even a little better than I expected. I think even casual fans will find a lot to enjoy here: the music’s rough and ready, influential in ways still unfolding today. The back-to-basics approach inspired everything from The Grateful Dead to the alt-country movement. But while The Basement Tapes Raw is a good listen, it’s not as explosive or revelatory as you’d expect. It’s original impact came from the context of it’s.
