Complete your Chopin, Paul Badura-Skoda collection. Etudes Op 25. No. 1 In A Flat Major. 6 In G Sharp Minor.
Listeners familiar with Paul Badura-Skoda's masterful recordings of the great Viennese classical composers know the Austrian pianist's style to be a surprising but satisfying blend of Old World charm and contemporary virtuosity. But only the most dedicated fans are likely to know his 1956 Westminster recording of Chopin's etudes, Opp. 10 and 25, released here by Music & Arts. Badura-Skoda takes outlandish chances with these familiar virtuoso works. His basic tempos are often close to breakneck, and his impetuous use of rubato might cause whiplash

10; 12 Études, Op. 25; 3 Mazurkas, Op. 59 Nos. 1, 2, 3. The Études are from the celebrated 1956 Westminster recording. Badura-Skoda is the last survivor of an extinguished tradition that comes from the late years of the XIX century, embodied by Kempff and Fischer his famous teacher. He plays with superb conviction, variegated imagination, ornamenting the arpeggios and octaves with accurate balance between introspection and expressiveness, remarking the central melody without restraining the accompaniment with the left hand without sentimentality but with sentiment.
